For many parents of troubled teenagers, a therapeutic program that takes the child from the home for a period of time offers some respite from the daily tumult of acting out, lies, and tension that has left the family under siege. However, just as the teenager is embarking on a journey of self-discovery, skill-development, and emotional maturation, so parents too need to use this time to recognize that their own patterns may have contributed to their family's downward spiral. This is The Parallel Process. Using case studies garnered from her many years as an adolescent and family therapist, Krissy Pozatek shows parents of preteens, adolescents, and young adults how they can help their children by attuning to emotions, setting limits, not rushing to their rescue, and allowing them to take responsibility for their actions, while recognizing their own patterns of emotional withdrawal, workaholism, and of surrendering their lives and personalities to parenting. The Parallel Process is an essential primer for all parents, whether of troubled teens or not, who are seeking to help the family stay and grow together as they negotiate the potentially difficult teenage years.

I found this book to be insightful and thought provoking. Clearly written with excellent life examples as well was dialogue. The only thing that really turned me off was the tone of the book in how the author speaks of parents. I wish the editor had been a little more sensitive in how the author portrays parents. Yes there are enmeshed parents and parents who constantly rescue their children, however, we are talking about a love like no other in this world. That all being said I found it to be condescending, otherwise I would give this book 10 stars!!!!Product details

The Parallel Process Growing Alongside Your Adolescent or Young Adult Child in Treatment (Audible Audio Edition) Krissy Pozatek Sara K Sheckells Lantern Books Books Reviews
Every parent with a troubled teen/young adult would do well to read this book to gain insight into their son/daughter. Parents with younger children would do well to read it and rethink some of the ideas that other child-raising books advocate.
This is one of the best books out there for parents of challenging kids/teens. It really helps parents to look at their part of the family dynamics. The book is written from the perspective of your child being in inpatient treatment. However, the parents' work is the same whether your child is in patient , out patient or no treatment. Parents have a role and need support to make changes to the relationship's dynamics. I highly recommend this book. It's easy to read.
Very good book all parents should read to learn new ways to communicate with teens. Unless your sailing through your kids teen years with no issues, grab a copy and learn a little. It's not a hard read and based on wilderness camp type therapy.
Thank you Krissy Pozatek for writing such a clear, straightforward account of the process the whole family goes through when there is such "in-balance" in your family. This should be required reading for all families who have had to send their adolescent child to a wilderness program and then on to aftercare. I could not put the book down. Although our son did not have substance abuse or truancy problems-- but instead egregious opposition, there are many parallels from which to draw and pitfalls to avoid. Krissy describes a little part of us in each case-study. We are better parents for our three children as a result of her book.
Excellent guidance for families who have or are considering having a teen participate in an outdoor wilderness program. Full of insightful advice for the parents to follow as well as great descriptions of what skills the teen is developing at the program and how the parents can align with those new skills at home.
I advise this book for parents of teens. Not just teens who are troubled or are in behavioral therapy. It has some very useful information for helping teens and parents.
You think you are protecting your child but over parenting can lead to kids who can't cope.
It is hard to watch your children fail or be sad.
With high achieving kids, it is so easy to grant them privileges beyond their maturity. Boundaries mean conflict--it is hard not to give in especially when you think you are rewarding great kids.
Rewarding great kids can lead to no boundaries and no learned control and great kids won't have the skills especially if they are not mature enough to navigate bad influences.
I found this book to be insightful and thought provoking. Clearly written with excellent life examples as well was dialogue. The only thing that really turned me off was the tone of the book in how the author speaks of parents. I wish the editor had been a little more sensitive in how the author portrays parents.
