If our dogs could only talk to us! That's what makes six year old Darlene Stempler's relationship with her nine year old black Labrador, Cookies, so special. Darlene believes with all her heart that she and Cookies communicate through ESP. Cookies is her best and most trusted friend. So when Cookies limps home one afternoon with a bad leg, she's worried about the outcome. Her father, Ron, has lost his job in the Great Recession, and though he's willing to do all he can to restore Cookie's to health, she's not sure time or the family's dwindling bank account is on her side.

The not so great Great Recession. Christmas. An out of work father. And an injured, aging family pet requiring costly ACL surgery. Ron Stempler fully intended to have their nine year old Labrador medically fixed up until everyone suggested an unthinkable alternative. Everyone except his wife and his daughter Darlene who claimed to have an unbreakable ESP connection with her beloved black lab. While trying to decide what to do with the animal they consider a "family member", it is Ron himself - disenfranchised, self doubting, but loving father - whose hard choices allow him to rediscover his valued place as a "family member".

"Family Member" arrived and I began reading it at 1:00 a.m. Funny, crisp and tightly written from the first line. It's very funny and cinematic -- it would be perfect for a Disney or other film that kids would enjoy while adults appreciate it on another level. Is there any hope of this at all? It seems ridiculous to "waste" this perfect family story!

A fun fast light read. Goodman entertained me with his cute premise that will make an enjoyable read for any age group. I would consider this novella a comedy but it does provide some edgy situations mixed with playful sexual tension. I laughed out loud...more than once. An enjoyable read that will make you squirm, squeal with laughter, and smile long after you have put the book down.
"Family Member" is a great read, and will keep you smiling! As usual, Mr. Goodman creates characters you can actually see and hear, and places them in unpredictable and vivid scenes. With lots of chaotic new twists on Nurse Ratched (if you know what I mean), The New Neighbors, crazy city employees, troubled foreigners, and precocious children, this one will certainly have you laughing! Carefully written by a superb storyteller and writer, you'll enjoy this one more than once!
They say lightening doesn't strike twice. If that's the case, then how does one explain the prolific genius output of Albert Goodman? Family Member-A Holiday Caper is another brilliant involving comedy informed by astute insights of the family dynamic propelled forward by the family dog. Goodman rounds all the bases in this one endearing, charming, relatable and hilarious, as in home run, beyond-the-outfield bleachers and into-the-parking lot home run hilarious. He grabs you with the premise in the first two chapters and from there on out you're laughing, crying from laughing or both. The supporting cast of characters provide even more hilarity and drama that can easily make this a time honored holiday treasure up there with A Christmas Story, Home Alone and yes, even It's a Wonderful Life when it's brought to life on the silver screen. Which given the proceedings as masterfully rendered by Albert Goodman, should be a fait accompli. Until then, I eagerly await that time when I can proudly say, "I told you so!" because this piece truly is the proverbial lightening in a bottle.
Looking for a fun read to share with your family? This is the book. You will laugh out loud as if you were watching one of your favorite sitcoms on TV. You will have a good time reading Family Member A Holiday Caper.
Wonderful touching story, told in a very gentle way. Albert makes it very readable for all. With a magical ending you can not predict. Adults , especially with kids, slow down for a few minutes and read this. It touched my heart.
This short story is a touching tale that I really related to, having had similar circumstances happen to me.
We have three (4) legged family members in our house, one of whom required surgery last year with a price tag we couldn't afford. He's sitting on my lap right now.

This story is great for adults, and kids alike, to experience the feeling of how valuable our "extended" families are to us.
